Bruff Heritage Group

Bruff Heritage Group was formed in 2008 by a group of people who share a common interest in preserving and promoting the heritage of our locality, here in Bruff, Co. Limerick.

The area is steeped in local history and local heritage and the heritage of a locality is equally important as the history of that locality. What do we mean by the term local heritage?

According to the Heritage Act, 1995, the term ‘Heritage’ includes built and natural assets of Ireland (both tangible and intangible), including its national heritage, monuments, archaeological objects, heritage objects, architectural heritage, flora, fauna, wildlife habitats, landscapes, seascapes, wrecks, geology, heritage gardens and parks and inland waterways.

Heritage really is a broad term which includes natural, historical and cultural inheritance. It can include a whole variety of things that are passed down from generation to generation, from local traditions to local folklore, from local records to local knowledge. The group wishes to acknowledge the magnificent contribution made through the publication of the Dawn Magazine in preserving this heritage over the past 40 years. In recent years the Camogue Rovers published an excellent compendium of local history entitled Our place Meanus & our People.

Promoting our local heritage can include preserving these traditions and records, local history and photographs from the past. It is as equally important to obtain and preserve photographs from the present, which for our future generations, will become a record of their past. Heritage is as much about the present and the future as it is about the past.

In creating this website, it is the hope and aspiration of Bruff Heritage Group that the site will become a forum where such local heritage can be shared and preserved in order that it may be fully appreciated by present and future generations.
